This week’s launch of the Taylor Review Report on Modern Working Practices (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/good-work-the-taylor-review-of-modern-working-practices) is particularly welcome because it refocuses attention on the workplace, and the importance of workplace practices for economic inclusion and health as well as for productivity and competitiveness. The references to “ways of working that support task discretion and involve employees in securing business improvements” are especially pleasing, though given the existence of more than seven decades’ worth of research evidence showing the impact of such workplace practices on health and business performance alike, it will be disappointing if they are lost within Taylor’s vast agenda. DS Smith is a European leading packaging company of customer-specific packaging, based in Lockerbie, Scotland. By 2030 the number of people aged 55 or over in high-income countries will grow to 500 million. The benefits to individuals, businesses and the economy of retaining older, experienced people in work are increasingly evident, becoming a key concern for EU and national policymakers as well as many employers. Until now policymakers have sought to retain older people in employment by raising the retirement age and, in some countries, by legislating against age discrimination in the workplace. At the same time, many employers and pension funds have reduced retirement benefits, especially during the recession. Such measures have made an impact but they also ignore the nature of work itself. Experience shows that forcing older people to remain in unsatisfying jobs, or to remain in jobs that they are no longer able to perform, is not the best solution for anyone involved. On 22nd June 2015 UK WON launched its film and report on Nottingham’s creative ecology, produced as part of the EU’s CINet initiative to recognise the value of creative businesses and the considerable contribution they make to the economy. The film and report celebrate the dynamism of the sector, its sense of community, and the support that is available to creative businesses and start-ups. CINet also involves creative clusters in Athens, Barcelona and Cascais (Portugal). The initiative follows survey responses received by UK WON from 39 local creative businesses. In this week’s Bank of England Inflation Forecast1 (#1) Governor Mark Carney bemoaned the “weakness” in UK productivity2 (#2). It seems as though the Bank is at something of a loss to explain the gap. Here are three key facts that might help Mr Carney: 1. Companies which systematically involve their employees in decision-making and empower them in their day-to-day work achieve higher levels of productivity A review of some sixty US articles shows that workplace innovation has a substantial effect on efficiency, with performance premiums ranging between 15 and 30 percent3 (#3). Extensive Swedish surveys found a very clear link between participative ways of working and productivity, with improvements of between 20 - 60%4 (#4). A Dutch study in 2009 showed that smaller firms with participative working practices increased their rate of productivity at nearly three time the rate of those without.
