Employee Engagement - the to key sustainable success
An engaged workforce is no longer just nice to have: it’s about survival. Evidence from across the world shows that organisations with engaged workforces perform signifi-cantly better than those without - and that they are much more resilient against the challenges posed by the state of the global economy. Employee engagement is not just about HR: it’s about productivity, innovation and quality as well as about looking after your workforce.
The problem is how to achieve it.
Employee engagement is not just another fad or initiative. High levels of engagement happen when every aspect of the organisation’s practices are aligned. Learn about how you can make this happen. Health Sector research by UKWON and Workplace Innovation
Changing healthcare through employee engagement
There is a growing body of evidence linking employee involvement to performance and productivity. However research into the impact of employee involvement on performance in health care organisations remains fragmented. Specific empirical studies can be found which link organisational practices to clinical or organisational outcomes in healthcare institutions. Best known is that of West et al which links multi-disciplinary team working and Strategic HRM to reduced patient mortality. Our own research in the Irish Health Sector demonstrates a statistical relationship between direct staff involvement practices in hospitals and performance indicators relating to such factors as hygiene standards and infection rates. Moreover UKWON’s own practical experience of working on quality improvement and change in healthcare brings to the fore the importance of engaging the practical knowledge and experience of staff at all levels.
It is clear that NHS Trusts should adopt a more systemic approach to employee engagement, seeing it as a core element of their approach to quality improvement at a time when more will have to be done with less. More specifically we need to break down the organisational silos that separate quality and governance as drivers for innovation from the people-based strands, including workplace partnership, that are often largely confined within the HR sphere.
