How is Resilience Achieved?

Communicative competence
Employees need to be given confidence, authority, opportunity and information if they are to bring ideas and understanding to the workplace. Many people will not previously have experienced respect for their knowledge and insights at work, at school or at home. Contributing effectively to improvement and innovation involves reflection, questioning, analysis, hypothesising, explaining and listening – all skills that need to be learnt and refined through continual use. There are several methods which organisations can deploy systematically to build individual and collective communicative competence including:

• training for managers and front-line staff in meeting skills;
• creative a culture of constructive questioning;
• team meetings;
• continuous improvement groups;
• town hall meetings on organisational strategy;
• change conferences;
• participative models of change.
