Organisational orientation
Employees are more fully engaged when they identify with the organisation and are not purely tasked orientated. For many workers the organisation beyond their individual workstation or team is relatively opaque: they have little understanding of how their work contributes to corporate goals or targets, little contact with senior management, and little awareness of the impact of the organisation on customers or the community.
Engagement with the wider organisation reflects the extent to which:
• teams and employee/trade union representatives are kept informed of strategic issues and are consulted on a wide range of issues;
• senior management is highly visible throughout the organisation;
• senior managers and employees at all levels share a common understanding that the tacit knowledge of frontline staff offers a valuable resource in both shaping and influencing strategic decisions;
• the organisation is seen in the wider community as a good employer and a good neighbour;
• employees feel that they do a good job for their customers or clients.
